What is a UTM builder?
A UTM builder adds campaign tags to a URL
A UTM builder is a campaign URL generator that appends tracking parameters to a website link so analytics tools can show which email, ad, or social post sent the visit. For an online course, that usually means tagging the sales page or checkout URL before you send traffic from a launch sequence.
UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, the naming leftover from the analytics product Google acquired. The five standard parameters are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content. Google also supports utm_id as a campaign ID, which GA4 still reads on landing-page hits and session attribution.
This free UTM link generator is built for course creators. Templates cover launch emails, webinars, affiliates, podcasts, blog posts, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, and Facebook or Google ads, so you are not inventing tags under a deadline.
The UTM parameters
Required fields tell analytics which channel and promotion sent the click. Optional fields separate keywords, creatives, and campaign IDs inside the same promotion.
| Parameter | What it answers | Course example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | What it answers Which site, product, or inbox sent the click? | Course example email, instagram, google, affiliate |
| utm_medium | What it answers What kind of traffic was it? | Course example email, cpc, social, video, referral |
| utm_campaign | What it answers Which promotion should this click roll up to? | Course example spring-course-launch, webinar-replay |
| utm_term | What it answers Which paid keyword or topic was involved? | Course example online-course, landing-page-builder |
| utm_content | What it answers Which creative or placement won? | Course example hero-cta, story, waitlist-button |
| utm_id | What it answers Which ads platform campaign ID should this click match? | Course example 123456789, launch-2026 |
Tag the course landing page before you drive traffic
When you create a landing page for an online course, every channel should open the same offer with a different UTM link. Keep the path identical, such as /course or /waitlist, and only change the tags. That is how you compare Instagram against a launch email without mixing two different pages.
Put the tagged URL on the asset students actually click: the button in your welcome email, the link in a YouTube description, the destination URL in Meta or Google Ads, and the affiliate swipe file. Do not rely on the untagged canonical URL in paid or outbound campaigns if you want clean reports.
If you already use SchoolMaker checkout or a dedicated sales page, generate one UTM link per creative. Two ads that share source, medium, and campaign but differ on utm_content will show you which thumbnail or headline produced enrollments.
UTM examples for online course marketing
Use one campaign name for a launch, then vary source and medium by channel. These patterns work for a first course or a returning cohort.
| Channel | utm_source | utm_medium | utm_campaign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch email | utm_source email | utm_medium email | utm_campaign course-launch |
| Instagram bio | utm_source instagram | utm_medium social | utm_campaign course-launch |
| Facebook ads | utm_source facebook | utm_medium cpc | utm_campaign course-launch |
| Google ads | utm_source google | utm_medium cpc | utm_campaign course-landing |
| YouTube description | utm_source youtube | utm_medium video | utm_campaign course-launch |
| Affiliate partner | utm_source affiliate | utm_medium referral | utm_campaign partner-promo |
Naming conventions that keep reports readable
Lowercase everything
GA4 does not merge Email and email. Turn on hyphenated lowercase in this builder so a messy paste does not split one channel into three rows.
Hyphens instead of spaces
Spaces become encoded characters in URLs. spring-course-launch is easier to scan in a traffic report than Spring%20Course%20Launch.
Reuse campaign names
One launch should share utm_campaign across email, ads, and social. Change source and medium, not the campaign, or you will never see the launch as a whole.
Open the link before you send
Click the generated URL once. Confirm the landing page loads and that the address bar still shows the UTM query string.
Where to read UTM data in GA4
In Google Analytics 4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Session source / medium and Session campaign show the tags this UTM builder writes. For a course, also mark purchase or start checkout as a conversion so you can see which campaign produced buyers, not only sessions.
Google's own Campaign URL Builder is the generic reference tool. This page does the same job with course-specific templates and a live preview, so you can tag a landing page without leaving a launch checklist.
Ads platforms have their own click identifiers. Keep UTM tags on the landing URL anyway: they still help you reconcile email, organic social, and affiliates next to paid campaigns in one analytics property.
